“Short stories are tiny windows into other worlds and other minds and other dreams. They are journeys you can make to the far side of the universe and still be back in time for dinner.” - Neil Gaiman
Genre: Anthology
🍃Although my bookshelf is sorely missing books of the Indian genre, the few books by Indian authors that I do have certainly make up for it. Reading anthologies is a great way of expanding your reading horizon. Oftentimes, an anthology consists of an eclectic mix of writers, genres, countries, and eras.
🍃"A Clutch of Indian Masterpieces" has a diverse collection of short stories from authors all around India. This modern Indian short stories anthology covers stories from the early 19th C to present-day India. From Rabindranath Tagore to Ismat Chughtai to Sashi Tharoor, this book has them all. Most of the 39 stories were translated from several different regional languages into English (Bengali, Urdu, Malayalam, Rajasthani, Odia etc.). It encompasses an extensive range of genres as well: fiction, non-fiction, mythology, fantasy, magic realism, and horror, among other genres.
🍃A list of some of the few short stories in this anthology:
• Toba Tek Singh(ٹوبہ ٹیک سنگھ) - Saadat Hasan Manto
• The Hunger Of Stones(ক্ষুদিত পাষাণ) - R. Tagore
• The Flood(വെള്ളപ്പൊക്കത്തിൽ)- O.V. Usha
• Trying to Discover India - Shashi Tharoor
• The Shroud(कफ़न) - Munshi Premchand
• Quilt "Lihaaf"(لحاف) - Ismat Chughtai
• Draupadi(দ্রৌপদী ) - Mahasweta Devi
• Games At Twilight - Anita Desai
🍃This book transcends language barriers and helps the reader understand Indian culture and its history through the stories written by a multitude of Indian authors.
